The Impacts of New Media Technology on Society and Education



Technology has revolutionized the methods we communicate with one another. The rise of social media networks (e.g. Facebook, Instagram) allows us to see what is going on in the lives of our friends and influencers. Telecommunication software (e.g. Skype, Zoom) allows individuals and businesses to communicate with one another over a video call. New media technology has certainly made our lives much more convenient. However, some experts have argued that technology has made us too reliant on our mobile devices and has reduced the capacity of us to be human. I will look at recent studies conducted on new media technology and how it has affected the different demographics of the United States. I will be documenting the major positive trends and the major negative trends from my analysis and will draw a conclusion on whether or not new media and technology had a benefit to society or a negative impact. As a bonus... I will also hone in on the demographic group of students and examine how new media has impacted education.

As I was watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies over the past years, there was one character who really stood out in terms of having the latest and greatest technology: Mr. Tony Stark (also known as, Iron Man). There was one technology he had which gave me an inspiration for the next type of “new” media, hologram communication. I could be wrong, but this technology only exists in movies and very limited functionality in the real world. Hologram communicating would allow end users to see the exact replica of a person in real-time who is moving, speaking, and even bringing up objects or files to display to others. This takes the current video conferencing to an entirely new level. Not only would users be able to see and hear what each person is doing, but they can also physically interact with the interface. Creativity and New Media

When I previously served as the Membership Director for the Association of Latino Professionals For America, I designed and created a sign-in platform using the survey software Qualtrics to track the students who would attend our events. Additionally, I would also use Qualtrics to create surveys to send out to the attendees as a way to review the event. We would use the reviews as a means to improve our future events and what we can offer students.
