Blog: Next New

As I was watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies over the past years, there was one character who really stood out in terms of having the latest and greatest technology: Mr. Tony Stark (also known as, Iron Man). There was one technology he had which gave me an inspiration for the next type of “new” media, hologram communication. I could be wrong, but this technology only exists in movies and very limited functionality in the real world. Hologram communicating would allow end users to see the exact replica of a person in real-time who is moving, speaking, and even bringing up objects or files to display to others. This takes the current video conferencing to an entirely new level. Not only would users be able to see and hear what each person is doing, but they can also physically interact with the interface. For example, a person can touch the other person’s holographic display on the shoulder and the person on the other end can sense it. They can also display files, objects, etc

Blog: Wiki So Far

On January 24th, I signed up for an HBO NOW free trial to watch what I now consider one of the greatest television series of all time. If you guessed Game of Thrones (GoT) by the time you finished reading that first sentence, you guessed right! Throughout each episode, I had to visit the Game of Thrones wiki page (you can find it at https://gameofthrones.fandom.com/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_Wiki) a few times to decrypt confusing plot details.  I was excited to find a Game of Thrones section in the TV shows section of the wiki (although I believe that the series should have its own page). There was no link on the main page which redirects to the TV Shows page so I decided to add a TV Shows hyperlink to the categories box. I have not made any major edits to the section yet but just glancing over it, I see that the content is outdated. Game of Thrones is currently airing its eighth season but the wiki is displaying content from 2016. Additionally, the character list needs to be updated with

Blog: P2P

The textbook definition of file sharing is, “The practice of sharing or offering access to digital information or resources, including documents, multimedia (audio/video), graphics, computer programs, images and electronic books.” P2P File Sharing or Peer-to-Peer File Sharing is the distribution or sharing of digital media through a P2P software program which allows users to access the media files by searching for other connected computers on the P2P network that offers the desired content. (Wikipedia)     Peer-to-Peer File Sharing has made it a nightmare for media companies to combat illegal piracy. By end of the year when “The Dark Knight” was released, illegal copies of the movie have been downloaded more than seven million times around the world. (Selter) Anonymous pirates have put the film online and enabled millions of users to view and download it.     One of the most common ways to download digital content is through torrenting. Torrenting is a key you need to download in

New Media can improve many aspects of the college. Let us start with social media accounts. Baruch College is on most, if not on all of the social networking services. In order for social media to be effective in improving Baruch College, it must have a large audience to display it to. The Baruch College Facebook page has roughly 25,000 followers which is a healthy number. However, Baruch College’s Instagram page could do better as it has just under 6,000 followers. In order to increase to gain more social media attention, Baruch College must post content that entices viewers to view the page. Social media is one of the most used communication tools between organizations and people. The college should update its Facebook and Instagram page with more content that connects with students. For example, the college can post about future projects on campus. The college could have posted updates on Facebook and Instagram informing students about the drastic appearance changes they would be

Creativity and New Media

When I previously served as the Membership Director for the Association of Latino Professionals For America, I designed and created a sign-in platform using the survey software Qualtrics to track the students who would attend our events. Additionally, I would also use Qualtrics to create surveys to send out to the attendees as a way to review the event. We would use the reviews as a means to improve our future events and what we can offer students. I attached screenshots below on what our sign-in log looks like: This is the back-end of the survey where the design of the survey is created as well as where the data is analyzed and extracted: And here is the front-end where users are able to see the finished product and also the place where students sign in at the beginning of every event:

HW Creativity

New Media fosters creativity from both the producer-end and the user-end. For example, Twitter monitors its own users to see what features they like and what they want to be changed or added. Then the company’s engineers turn the ideas into new features. In a 2009 New York Times Article, when Twitter was still in its early years, Twitter only offered a 140 character post. However, the company decided to outsource some of its idea generations to its users and the list and retweet features were born.      Technology companies now offer beta testing for its employees and its users. It could be a special developer program within the app where a user who is savvy in software engineering and/or design can create and test new features for an app with other developers. The company can release some of these features to a test market of a limited number of participants to see how well it performs. If it performs well, the developers can be rewarded handsomely. This establishes a platform for o

Blog: Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used for education, business, therapy for returning soldiers, rehabilitating patients, gaming, the list goes on and on. For education, students can don VR goggles to take virtual field trips to faraway places, learn about refugees, or explore the inner workings of a volcano. (Earle) It has received mix reception from teachers. Some don’t believe virtual worlds add much while others are enthusiastic. One history teacher, Elias Thomas of the St. Pius X Catholic School, said that virtual worlds are more of a supplement to the actual learning process but also noted that VR fields trips can give students a sense of “being there” and seeing everything to scale. (Earle) Virtual worlds give people the opportunity to experiment with virtual reality and seeing what creations and design they can build. For example, virtual world designer, Jackie Morie, can experiment with building an Iraqi village for veteran therapy or building a similar Iraqi village for military trainin

Blog: Twitter

Starting a Twitter discussion with a post is similar to starting a BlackBoard thread. You post something of interest and people will reply. People can add links, reference other people, and respond to others. Exactly the same as starting an in-class discussion. The only difference is that Twitter is limited to 280 characters per tweet whereas there is no limit on BlackBoard posts or a limit on that amount of words a person can say.

Blog: Social Networking Sites

Ahh, social networking sites. Finally, I can write about something I am proficient in. In this blog post, I will be comparing my impressions of four social networking sites: 1) Facebook, 2) Instagram, 3) Twitter, and 4) LinkedIn.     Facebook. I made a Facebook account at the end of 7th grade in middle school. Facebook then seemed so simple, friends posting statuses and pictures, playing Facebook games, and occasionally chatted through messenger. However, Facebook lost its touch and meaning throughout the years. It could be that I used it much less than I did before. Or it could be all the updates the company made to the social networking site that made it feel less personal. Today, I mainly use Facebook for its messenger app. However, there are some interesting posts and videos that I see from time to time when scrolling, so it's not too bad.     Instagram. This is the app in which I clock the most thumb miles on. There are many features I love about this app: Stori

Blog Social Networking

Social Networking has expanded tremendously over the past decade. Social networks bring users "closer" to their friends, family, and colleagues while also acting as a medium for spreading messages, entertainment, and building fame. Users might use a social network such as Instagram and Facebook to share updates about their lives through the stories feature or post photos on a recent trip. A company might use social media to connect with their stakeholders and share any new updates a company is looking to pursue. Although social networking brings the world closer together, there is also a "dark side." In a podcast published by the National Public Radio, Frank Langfitt reports on how social networking technology has revolutionized the job recruiting process for both corporate recruiters and job hunters. The professional network, LinkedIn, allows users to list their work experiences, skills, and certifications. This allows them to highlight their professional caree

BLOG: Blog vs. Wiki

As a person who rarely relies on blogs and wikis for information, I find this blog post to be a fresh new perspective of these two types of media. One major similarity I find between the two media is that users can edit, post, and comment without having much-credited knowledge on the topic at hand. This can usually lead to biases and the spread of false or opinion-based information that might not reflect the truth. It can blur the lines between what is true and what is not, creating a divide in the information the public receives. But, blogs and wikis do have their differences. Wikis are a knowledge-sharing page consistently updated by a group of people. Blogs are often opinion-based pages run by one or two contributors who update the blog sporadically. Both blogs and wikis allow user collaboration in the forms of discussion forums, comment sections, etc. Another key difference is that the content of blogs are usually protected from unauthorized editing by outside people while conten

The Impacts of New Media Technology on Society and Education

Technology has revolutionized the methods we communicate with one another. The rise of social media networks (e.g. Facebook, Instagram) allows us to see what is going on in the lives of our friends and influencers. Telecommunication software (e.g. Skype, Zoom) allows individuals and businesses to communicate with one another over a video call. New media technology has certainly made our lives much more convenient. However, some experts have argued that technology has made us too reliant on our mobile devices and has reduced the capacity of us to be human. I will look at recent studies conducted on new media technology and how it has affected the different demographics of the United States. I will be documenting the major positive trends and the major negative trends from my analysis and will draw a conclusion on whether or not new media and technology had a benefit to society or a negative impact. As a bonus... I will also hone in on the demographic group of students and examine how
