Blog: Advice

New Media can improve many aspects of the college. Let us start with social media accounts. Baruch College is on most, if not on all of the social networking services. In order for social media to be effective in improving Baruch College, it must have a large audience to display it to. The Baruch College Facebook page has roughly 25,000 followers which is a healthy number. However, Baruch College’s Instagram page could do better as it has just under 6,000 followers. In order to increase to gain more social media attention, Baruch College must post content that entices viewers to view the page.

Social media is one of the most used communication tools between organizations and people. The college should update its Facebook and Instagram page with more content that connects with students. For example, the college can post about future projects on campus. The college could have posted updates on Facebook and Instagram informing students about the drastic appearance changes they would be witnessing in the library before being caught off-guard with the scaffolding and yellow caution tape. The college can also post important deadlines such as open registration for classes or last day to drop a class. From what I’ve seen so far, most of the major events and deadlines are posted from the accounts of student organizations and student life as opposed to the official Baruch College account.

Another idea is to create a “help desk forum” where students could voice their issues, ideas, and concerns to the Baruch governing body. There could be people from each level of government who would review these “tickets” daily and implement strategies to resolve them. There could be a few representatives from the Undergraduate Student Government, one or two from the Graduate Student Assembly, and from the Baruch College’s governing body (not quite sure if there’s a name for them.)

  1. I like the ideas that you presented that could help Baruch College become a more socially connected college with its students through the greater utilization of already existing social media. I’m aware that most club updates and events are only posted to the student life or relevant Class of 20** group pages that a student can join on Facebook. However, I am often unaware of events happening on the 2nd floor during club hours because I had not checked what would be going on that day or week on the Facebook group page. On more than one occasion, I have been surprised by some of the clubs that Baruch offers who were running events in the past few months. Reminders and updates that are posted to Baruch’s official social media accounts like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook would go a long way in promoting traffic to these events and give clubs more exposure and new members. The suggestion of a method of open communication with the Baruch governing body is a good one. If this is implemented, students may be able to voice concerns more easily. Baruch College can become a more digitally connected environment and improve communication with its students if some of these suggestions are implemented in the near future.

  2. Hi Eric, I couldn't agree more with your statement about how Baruch lack's in its social media presence heavily on Instagram. I feel like in our generation, Instagram is the most used app by us college students so I really do think they need to step their game up and post more content on the IG page. It would be a great way to keep students updated on all different things going on campus or even for example weather conditions! Everyone knows it's such a hassel to find out whether or not school is closed because not everyone checks their school emails the second they wake up, but something they do check very frequently is their social media accounts!
