Blog: P2P

The textbook definition of file sharing is, “The practice of sharing or offering access to digital information or resources, including documents, multimedia (audio/video), graphics, computer programs, images and electronic books.” P2P File Sharing or Peer-to-Peer File Sharing is the distribution or sharing of digital media through a P2P software program which allows users to access the media files by searching for other connected computers on the P2P network that offers the desired content. Peer-to-Peer File Sharing has made it a nightmare for media companies to combat illegal piracy. By end of the year when “The Dark Knight” was released, illegal copies of the movie have been downloaded more than seven million times around the world. (Selter) Anonymous pirates have put the film online and enabled millions of users to view and download it.

One of the most common ways to download digital content is through torrenting. Torrenting is a key you need to download in order to start downloading the actual content. Once the torrent of the file is downloaded, a BitTorrent client is needed to scan the torrent and find the users (also known as seeders) who are sharing the file and establish a connection with them. If the connection is successful, than the actual content will begin downloading. (Afdzal)
